Sharon Baker (UK) is a Birmingham-based printmaker creating atmospheric prints evoking emotions and moods.

Baker works with printmaking processes:  photo-etching, monoprint, lithography and, more recently, polymer photogravure,  she is inspired by domestic, every-day, commonplace scenes and draws on nostalgia, memory, and ideas around class and culture, to create her prints.

Her work is eclectic and develops in different styles: the subject and content of her prints can look distinctly different depending on her imagery and the printmaking processes she uses. 

One work strand is routed in Nineteenth Century photographic Pictorialism in the creation of grainy, monochrome, photo-based prints where her imagery relies on a controlled tonality to create their unique atmosphere. Another area of exploration is more abstract using gestures repeated and juxtaposed in different, nuanced visual meditations. Her images suggest both solidity and fragility and patterns of flux and motion. Motifs reoccur in her work over the years and become personal emblems. She likes to focus on the ubiquitous and celebrates the banality of familiar objects and scenes. Curtains, windows, mirrors and reflections are reoccurring motifs. She is fascinated by the mysteries of the interiors they screen, reflect and reveal.  

Baker studied Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton, completing a BA Honours degree specialising in Printmaking. After graduating, she spent time in Paris, France painting outdoor murals before moving back to Birmingham, UK. She gained her Master of Arts in Fine Art from Coventry University.

Baker’s prints have been shown in exhibitions in Europe and the UK including in the House of Commons. Winner of the Westmorland Landscape Prize (2019). Awarded a printmaking residency in Germany by the Coventry-Dresden Arts Exchange (2022). Recent exhibitions include International Original Print Exhibition (2025) ING Discerning Eye (2025) Leamington Spa Open (2026) RBSA Portrait Prize (2026) and The Derby Print Open (2026), winning the Intaglio Printmaker Prize.
