Work: Drops & Folds

Monotypes inspired by a curtain hanging in a window: the net curtain that hung in my grandparent’s kitchen.  ‘The Drop’ monotypes, ‘Silver Folds’ monotypes and smaller series: ‘Small Drops’, ‘Silver textures’ and ‘Small Folds’. All developed from earlier work (see ‘Net Curtain’). These prints were created by using fabric as the matrix.

The Drop monotypes a series of 30 prints on Fabriano Rosaspina 220gsm paper, each 50 x 80cm. 
Silver folds- a series of 10 monotypes on Somerset Velvet Black 280gsm paper, approx. 56 x 76cm.
Three suites of smaller monotype prints on a more intimate scale some using black ink on white paper, others using silver ink on black paper: Small Drops 1-7 29.5 x 42cm; Silver textures 1-8 27.5 x 36.5cm; 11 small folds 21.5 x 28cm.

They explore patterns and gestures created by over-printing. Visual meditations and experiments inspired by looking at light through curtains. By making multiple impressions and playing with over printing layers creating translucent and opaque areas, they mimic the net curtain’s role of partial concealment or revelation; the liminal space between the public and the private. The images suggest both solidity and fragility and patterns of flux and motion.
